Insulation on the Loft Floor, Not the Roof Slope
Loft Insulation — sometimes called the “cold roof” method — is laid flat between and over the ceiling joists. It keeps heat inside the rooms below, while the loft itself stays cold and unheated. This is different from Warm Roof Insulation, which is fitted along the rafters and is only needed when the loft becomes a habitable room.
270mm Is the Current Standard
Older homes are often insulated to only 100mm or less. Topping up to 270mm mineral wool is the current recommended depth.
DIY-Able, With Limits
Rolls and boards can be a competent DIYer's project. Blown (loose-fill) insulation needs specialist equipment and is professional-only.
Grants May Be Available
Government schemes including the Warm Homes Plan periodically offer support toward loft insulation costs — we'll point you in the right direction.
Signs You Need More
Cold ceilings, high heating bills, or visible thin/patchy insulation when you look in the loft hatch are all signs it's worth a free survey.
Converting the Loft Instead?
If you're turning the loft into a room, you need Warm Roof Insulation instead — see the difference here.

Frequently Asked Questions
All Your Most Common Questions Answered
Cost depends on your loft's current insulation depth, access, and whether it's rolls, boards, or professionally blown insulation. We confirm an exact price after a free survey — there's no charge for the visit and no obligation to proceed.
Loft Insulation is laid flat between and over the joists, on the loft floor — the "cold roof" method, used when the loft stays an unused storage space. Warm Roof Insulation is fitted along the rafters, on the roof slope — the "warm roof" method, required whenever the loft becomes a habitable room, such as with a Velux conversion. They solve different problems and aren't interchangeable.
Often not — many Velux (rooflight) conversions fall under Permitted Development rather than requiring full planning permission. However, this has genuine limits: volume allowances for extensions, conservation area restrictions, and flats or maisonettes are generally excluded from Permitted Development rights. We'll confirm your specific situation during the survey rather than assume.
Not directly, with standard boarding — laying boards straight onto mineral wool insulation compresses it and reduces how well it performs. A raised boarding system lifts the boards above the insulation on a supporting frame, preserving full insulation depth while still giving you usable storage space.
